Have any of you guys pole vaulted in HS or college ?
I did all 4 years in HS. Track teams were divided in to 4 catagories; A, B, C & D, by height and weight, A being the largest dude’s; I was a C so a very small guy. My best was 12’6”. At that time (1966-67) the world record was close to or just over 18’. This kid, and anyone else, jumping 20’+ is absolutely incredible.
Did y’all notice how long the pole was he was using ? It was huge and yet the top of the pole Was beneath the bar he cleared. He had to pull himself up and then push up and away from the pole to clear the bar.
His form was right on!

I knew not to try it. I weighed 73 pounds at 13 and a whopping 110 at 21.
I figured if I could even manage to run with that pole and if, by some stroke of luck, managed to get it in the pocket and manage to flex the pole,it would straighten Violently and reject me onto the gravel runway. Injuring both body and pride.

As the vaulter SPRINTS down the runway and plants the end of the pole in the (sunken) metal box, your forward momentum and body weight will carry you up and hopefully over the bar, then into the landing area. How much it flexes is dependent largely upon your speed, which is critical for the vault.
You’ve got to be very fast and have a strong upper body to be successful.
I was small and a just a little fast so my success was very limited.

For our practice sessions we did some fun workouts after the regular team routines.
We had a big rope (25-30’) in the gym which we climbed, hands only, from a sitting position on the floor to the ceiling where we slapped a beam, and then back down to the floor. Our legs were supposed to be straight out in front during the climb, that was tough.
A good upper body workout.
We also walked on our hands for strength and flexibility, lots of fun. This was done in the gym and on the football field, walking across the field...short way not lengthwise.

It was fun to be young ONCE. 🏃🏼‍♂️ 🚶🏻‍♂️ 👨🏼‍🦯
