Ugh, there is something else that has been happening that is akin to putting a mirror in the desert. Modern energy codes require buildings to be glazed with whats called "low-e glass" - a glass that has a metallic coating that reflects UV and IR sun rays. It helps the building interiors to stay cool in the summer, but it reflects so much UV that in many cases it melts the plastic parts on cars parked next to the building.
