The backfire on these engines has been called 'the nature of the beast.' Certain things can be done to mitigate this tendency, that involve changes to the carburetor. One can also change their riding habits, such as shifting to a higher gear, and using the brakes, instead of letting the engine hold back the motorcycle when descending a hill. Other riders like this tendency to backfire.
