It is easy to check the front disk brake pads, but no so obvious with the drums that are contained in a case. I ride in NYC with a lot of stop and go traffic, so I tend to use the rear brake a lot, and want to make sure its in good condition.

On the front pads, take a look at them and you'll see a groove in the middle. If you can't see a groove then it's time to replace.
