More throttle = less fuel
03/01/23 at 13:34:51
I tried searching for this but didn't find anything specific to my issue even though I am sure it exists here somewhere:
1995 with Raptor petcock, stock carb, and throttle assembly.
It starts fine and idles, but when throttle is applied, in neutral, the bike dies. Essentially more throttle twist equals less fuel. There is no difference if the choke is pulled out all the way. I noticed it likes to slip back into the intermediary position so a choke replacement might be in order.
I assume this is a carb issue, but I'd like to make an order of operations. The petcock is clear, fuel is flowing, so do I work my way to the airbox/filter or just go into the carb first?

I suspect that you either have a clogged jet, or the diaphragm in the upper chamber is cracked or not properly seated.

Change that air filter lately ? Are you running a fuel filter ? Fuel is flowing. If it’s not any of those then carb is dirty and needs blown out. Stock carb it could be a massive vacuum leak too ! Big fun .

Air filter is clean, no in-line fuel filter.
Looks like I am doing some carb checks next.
I'm pretty sure I have a Mikuni sitting around somewhere so maybe I should just try to put that in. Thanks for the input.

Most likely clogged main jet
but I think I had the same symptoms with bad float ht.
if it were a bad diaphragm, it just wouldn't accelerate, not up and die.

Sitting, idling, all good,a twist on the stick and it just Dies? I've seen that happen with old gas,,
If it's old gas, it's easy to swap out.
Otherwise, as has been noted, if it was the petcock it wouldn't die.
If you can drop the bowl you can access the jets.

I'm not sure when this bike was ridden last, I had not considered the gas. I will have it drained and replaced.

If you leave ethanol gas in there to long, it can gum up the carb as well. I won't put that stuff anymore.

My bike had a worn and sticky slide a few years back and acted as you described. One time it wouldn't go over 20 mph in any gear. I cleaned it up and it worked well for a while.
Later that summer it stuck hug up again on a gear shift and it went from 45 to 20 in a hurry. It limped along for a few seconds before it freed up and went back to normal.
I purchased a replacement slide it's been problem free ever since. If the black coating is worn off and sticking to the body of the carb it is time to get a new one.

Doesn't sound like enough miles to have worn the slide, unless it was subjected to a buncha dirt, enough to get through the air filter. It's not one of those bikes that got a few miles being dragged, is it?

Nah the drag and drop was a one-time deal. It was a Harley anyway, we needed the weight.
