Amal carbs

Wow it’s really been some years since I dealt with a Amal carb. I thought the round slide VM was primitive till today. Puttin the BSA back together so gather all my Amal parts and gave it a quick rebuild. This carb doesn’t even have a pilot jet , mixture & idle screws , needle jet & adjustable needle , main jet. Very primitive, choke was removed only leaving a tickler for cold starts , push and hold tickler down for a few seconds , all it does is push the float down and allow the carb to flood fuel up above float chamber. Primitive but very cool. Having to put my technology blinders on during this build , not only will it look the part everything will be vintage or era correct. A stock  BSA B50mx main jet is 220-250 the one is this carb is a 390 , the biggest hole in a jet I have ever seen.   Shocked

I can remember one motorcycle magazine saying the "Bing" carb on a Maico was "As Sophisticated as a brick".

I have a friend that does a lot of work on old Nortons....he has a lot of Amal experience if you end up needing help.

Yeah but Maicos were fast and if a Bing carb is a brick , then the Amal is it’s equal as a dirt clog. Yeah if you see him ask him about the lack of a pilot jet.
I’m thinking that the mixture screw covers the job and the needle takes over. It’s a 32mm Amal with a velocity stack on it and a finned carb spacer  an it’s ported so when looking thru it all stack ,carb, spacer, head that Amal completely swallows and hides the slide. It’s wfo and it a straight shot at the valve . As I recall this thing sucked up the fuel , it’s a British beast and yes she can dance. I remember first time I rode it the brake pedal was tucked in close on left side , I took off along this long building , trying to be cool a short wheelie 1st,2nd ah what the hell grab 3rd , lookin at a ten foot high pile of about 200 stripped motorcycle frame in a pile that I was about to impale myself on at 50 mph , just barely got that pedal with my big toe locked it up , slid it sideways , stopping just inches from certain death. But I managed to make it cool and in control.
My freakin eyes were popping out of my head while I was lookin for the brake lookin at that pile of frames. If those people watching only knew !

Lancer it’s a 932 the model just after the Amal monobloc. They have a name for it but can’t remember it. The slides tend to break when worn , little pieces , straight into the cyl.
Have to inspect slides from time to time , don’t forget.
