Ruttly, I had spinal meningitis when I was 7, spent 2 weeks in the hospital,  virtually no memory of it, unconscious 95% of the time, was not expected to survive, but if I did there would be serious handicaps.
Thats why I’m the way I am.

That’s why you’re a diehard Savage Brother ! Strange how something’s in childhood direct us to our adulthood passions. Neither father or brother ever influenced my direction in life , it just happened that way. It was the first mini bike at age 7 that was to blame , and growing up in the sixties , the hay day of motorcycle off roading ! I was also deadly ill as a child with pneumonia, several times. When I was in the hospital the room overlooked a busy Geary street in San Francisco  , a million cars  would go by  and never peak my interest , but the motorcycles seemed  so free to  go wherever/whenever.  Maybe that was my catalyst  , to start my burning fire of motorcycle passion !       Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Do you know where this years ride will be ?

Yes Ruttly ,

The 2024 ride was in "SD Surges" area.
The 2025 ride is "The Ozarks" , North-West Arkansas.

Our Savage Ride was there (Ozarks) for two years and it's a GREAT AREA for a small bike ride!    The ridding is such that a 250cc would be just as good as a 2500cc .   It's all laid-back putt-putt .    I was on a V7-II Guzzi and ridding double and except for one long up-hill climb I never needed more than 1/2 throttle.   My 25 HP 350cc Enfield ridding solo would be right at home in the area, 4th gear climbs up anything at 50-60mph.   I suspect our ride around Moab might be better on a smaller bike too , but I'm bringing the 650cc  one for the "Un-Known factor", at least the first year.   It's only 100 pounds more. Smiley

We all load the bikes up for them long hauls !

To tell you the truth I would have trouble doing a ride in this state. My health is my first concern till I get better I’m laying low. I did do a 51 mile ride on the tracker today. Felt no stress in the chest while riding , maybe due to an abundance of air being taken in ! But the hip gave me my reality check for the day. That bike is jetted to perfection , not a burp , cough or a fart , just a big thumper that makes me smile. I’ll work on getting healthy , not ready to die just yet , I got bikes to build !     Cool

Next ride 101+ miles , I have a new short cut to all the m/c dealerships in Modesto , well most of them on Carpenter Road. All backroads along the river , bugs, bugs, bugs ! Have a few loops in hills to the west , mapped one and still haven’t run it yet. It will require at least 2 fill ups(small tank)and carry a can of fuel from the hardware store just in case it’s farther than expected. This time of year it’s nice & cool , but soon it will be 100+ , the norm !

Put that Honda back together , still same problem , a bad ground. This bike is a bit different  has a ground at battery and frame and all other grounds spider off  in different locations. Typical Japanese wiring so knowing that I took the entire harness off the bike and started ohm testing all the grounds connections , found 2 grounds that readings had 10 times the resistance of all the rest. Cut that nasty sticky 39 yr old tape off the harness a bit at a time till of course almost to the other end before I found it. Tiny brass crimp holding 5 wires together , 1 wire spiders off to the 2 with high resistance. Cut crimp out strip the 5 wires , slip a section of shrink tubing on the wire and solder the connection , slide shrink over soldered joint. Still have to wrap entire harness with fuzzy electrical tape and install it. Fuzzy tape is my favorite , looks great and is more flexible than black electrical tape. I also wire electric guitars so I’m kinda fussy about how things are wired. I’m tired I’ll wrap & install it tomorrow. See if I fixed it !

That little Honda is complete but some plastics , but haven’t felt like kick starting it. Every time that I think about starting it I just go ride the tracker somewhere for absolutely no other reason than it’s got a happy button. What can I say , it does make me happy ! Double Ugly has been a formidable opponent/foe , punch for punch in my face daily. Started doing rear brakes get the wheels & drums off , needs drums , I knew it , order 4 all the same. Rest of the parts arrived , kinda , everything but the shoes. Call the guy , rest off That order on the way. I knew spider gears in diff  are worn. I was spinning right rear drum flange and I could feel some thing either bad spiders or wheel bearing , so gave the left side a spin twice as bad ! Pull axles , backing plates , drain diff , yup spiders shaft is 1/4” over spec , remove carrier , bearings are nice , ring & pinion perfect , carrier has some damage but still very usable , so just reassemble with new spider gear set. Very wrong , I spent hours calling around and the parts I need are NLA. So what I did find is there are no sets , just random parts still around , I found the odd ball side gears with 19 splines and the thrust washers. I guess late Dana 41 to early Dana 44. But cannot find spider gears or the thrusts or the shaft. Oh I’ll find it , I have a coffee maker ! Finally , a used set shows up on eBay , in very usable condition. But still looking for new if possible , almost sure the shaft is available. Either way I think the used kit is enough to reassemble & continue with brakes. Left axle bearing was bad so both sides will get new bearings too. One real cool thing kinda popped up was a stainless pre bent brake line set , it’s gonna save a lot of time. So yeah I been swimming in it , barely keepin my head above the water. I’m in my element finding parts that don’t exist to fix it and make it go !    Cool

Yaaa , I'd enjoy having a old Honda CB350

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb350K_70.html

but I don't need the extra pain-in-the-sitting place !

So , I have a modern classic.   It's not as fast but it's nice , and it don't vibrate !  Roll Eyes   I did enjoy putting a performance cam in it and opening up the breathing holes best I could !  Smiley
......................................

I thought I wanted a old XL250   :

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_xl250_72.html

But I read somewhere they have a "Primary"  chain .   I don't like the idea of chain Primary - more than I like the idea of the things a XL250 could do !     So , that was the end of that !   Grin

The 305 Scrambler seems like a good idea ?   Huh

https://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_c77.html

You have any idea how they're built ?    I think the "Point-less" firing system is available for most of them old Honda's ?
But
I've got my single cylinder 350 up to about the same HP as the 305 Honda engines of Old and the new 350 Enfield has a lot more torque .  Wink

When I don't know what to do ... I do nothing ...

That’s a tough question ! What vintage bike to own ? Something almost modern , fair amount of power , easy to work on , cheap parts , fuel mileage and comfy to ride a spell. Kinda sounds like  RE 350 and it has a happy button , LOL. I’d didn’t pick the BSA , it was thrust upon me. Half Pint will be the Sunday bike. I think if I had to choose a vintage bike to buy & ride it would be without a doubt , a Norton 850 ( with a happy button ). Semi exotic , British , Fast , centerfold worthy in any moto porn mag ! Shows impeccable tastes & sophistication ( fancy words for you paid out the a$s for it ). Norton uses shapes and lines like no other. Hand built and it shows.

Alright I’m back. Little Honda with a ground problem still giving me fits , had to step away. Double Ugly definitely progressing , rear axle is done , rear brakes done ( now have a parking brake ) that means I can drive it  , Right !   New shocks at all 4 corners. New rear tires are on(traction tires) , haven’t got tubes to mount the other 3 steer tires yet , next week. Moving to front brakes then master cylinder & brake lines. Pushing hard everyday to get brakes done before summer heat sets in. Then back on the bikes at night when it’s cool. It’s hard trying to be a purist by keeping it old while renewing  the old girl. Could have put modern wheels with radial tires but NO , she started life with 16 x 4 1/2” rims with 6.50-16 bias ply tires , tall & skinny tires. She’s gonna look like it just left the farm for an errand. Making friends all over the lower 48 hunting parts and an education with every phone call. After it runs & drives , the interior , doors & glass. Big Big fun , getting to use all those tools I brought home when I retired. It will sit for weeks sometimes , key on , pull choke , pump the pedal twice , push starter button , it starts so quick it scares me !     Cool
