Does the size of the rider affect choice of spring Rate? It would matter with respect to spring ,what? Rating? How much it takes to compress it is one thing, and I just don't understand the difference. Okay, I don't understand how they work together. How would a guy know what spring he wanted if he had a big table of springs with their rating for

Is there a Readers Digest technical level explanation somewhere?
If you don't want to mess with it, that's okay. I'm just wishing I had a better understanding about it, it's not like I'm going to have to shop for The Right shocks .

The eye's are too wide, and the bushing sleeve ID is .500 vs 14 MM on the S40. The rubber bushings are bonded to the sleeve, making modifications difficult. So, back on the shelf they go and still considering my options.

easy fix, 1/2 OD tubing with .020 wall. cut to length and insert.

Maybe I wasn't clear. The S40 shock eye sleeve is 14MM (.551") ID and the Sportster sleeve ID is .500". I need a larger diameter ID, not smaller. The .500" sleeves could easily be drilled to 14MM as the wall is thick enough, but they're bonded to the rubber bushing and don't come out, so I can't chuck them in my lathe or hold them in a drill vice.

I replaced my rear shocks with progressive 412-4005
They have an ID of 16mm
And the stock bolt is 14mm
I had available to me steel tubing 5/8" ID x .035 wall
They fit tightly and work great.

The 412's at 11" have more travel than stock shock but I had to use the 5th pretravel setting so I bought a set of 440-1022 and can use the lowest preset. They are good.

Beast has a set of intruder shocks and I like them best of all.

I laced up an 18 for the rear and fitted a 120/80-18 to get the rear up some. I'm looking for slightly longer shocks to reduce the steering head angle a bit more. I like the bike, but it's one of the slowest steering that I've ever ridden.
