I think the aluminum Dunstall type tank has more of a British vibe while the smaller tank more of a Ryca look. The Dunstall type tank is way more dramatic , sure to turn heads and spur conversation. But , fuel is heavy and may give it a top heavy feel to it. Riding with tank half full is an easy fix for having an attractive & dramatic look. Build on ! We all watching ! The rear fender should turn up to be a major challenge, here is how I solved it. The fender has to be tucked way into the frame in order to get a proper profile against the wheel, and this meant that the 2 "horns" were in the way. I had to make bends into the fender to enable it to be mounted without interfering with the frame.
Here is a picture of the tool I made to help bashing a proper relief into the fender.

Here you see the fender when it sits on the tool, with the resief hammered into it. I used a plastic hammer to do the deforming.

Here you see the fender with its 3 points of fixation welded to the sub frame.

And here is a snapshot of the bike in profile, showing the fit of the fender.
The fine curved fender transforms into (by means of welding) into a flat plate that extends down along the air cleaner box, but this is not visible in this view.

As discussed earlier, there are 2 tanks possible, a Ryca style (youck) and an alluminium Dunstall type. If course the dunstall it will be.
But the one I bought was wider up front than the front fork and the clipons would allow, and I also thought it looked too bombastic for a nimble 650 single, so some alterations were in order.
This picture illustrates the point, and part of the solution:
A "V" cut along the length of the tank makes it possible to bring the tank into correspondence with my tastes and also allow enough clearance for fork and handlebars.

Here the tank is shown in the shape that fits the bike better. This also means that the front of the tank now has a profile much like the tank of the early Honda CB450 from the late sixties, a tank I much adored, and still do.
Still a long way to go with this tank, though.

A word of warning!
Don't tig weld parts of the bike when they are still _on_ the bike.
At least in my case, this caused the decomp relay to fry, so that I had to replace it with a utility relay to take care of triggeing the starter relay. The decomp part is not used anymore.

Anyway, I finally decided to abandon the wiring harness with all it's silly bulky connectors, and instead upgrade to this fine piece if kit built by German "Motogadget". It is a sort of centralised solid state relay and sequencer type of thing, which will handle the delivery of power to ignition, lights blinkers etc. and even with nifty features that you can read about elsewhere if you like.

So here is the way the bike will look like. I cannot bring it over myself to mount a rear light and license plate directly on to the rear fender, so it will receive a separate mount originating from the rear axle.

My wife did not fully understand that I am building a sculpture, she more or less thinks I am repairing the bike. So when I came in from the shop and told her that the decomp relay had fried, she said: You bought a pile of junk, why don't you just buy the bike you really wanted ?

I replied that this is the bike I want (also because the Matchless G50 which I wish I could have had is inaccessible) but she is right, with the amount spent already I could have gone out and bought that MotoGuzzi 850 LeMans that I have often admired.
Then I got to pondering, why exactly do I love this bike? And it came to me:

It is because of you guys! The help, the support, the attention and encouragement from you guys is unbeleivable, invaluable, something to cherish to be embraced, I am touched.

Cheers, Finn Hammer

Hold on, I think there is a problem, but don,t worry, I have your back.

If a woman criticizes you on a project you are working on, (hold on tight) then there is a chance, that she thinks you are not paying enough attention to her.

To be save, the best thing you can do is quickly buy everything you wanted for your bike and workshop.

If a fuss happens...
don't buy her flowers,
because strangely enough they react very differently to that than you think.

When you think she has finished speaking, just wait, there is more.
If she responds with OK to your defense, then you have a problem.
Whatever you do do not mention her period.

Zevenenergie,
Thanks for your kind advice.

I also fitted a steering damper, to have a chance of countering the pesky wobble that occoured while the bike was in stock steering trim.

I also mentioned the risk of damaging the decompression relay during tig welding on the frame.
Well, it would appear that the ignition module went the same way. Just not my day, that particular day.

Cheers, Finn Hammer

The bike looks great!  Lots of very nice work that requires talent and patience (and cool tools).

Your steering damper is completely different than how I did mine.  My tank sits very low and there is no room to add anything on top of the cylinder head....I even had to build a notch in the tank to provide clearance for the top of the head cover where the head cover has the bulge for the cam sprocket.
