Hay , do you remember that year I tried to plan a ride to God's Acre ? Well Marcia and I went but we took the van.

It's in South Carolina not to far from the Norther Border . I'd kinda like to go back and drink some more of that Blessed Water (just for a " booster shot ") Its also is called " The Healing Spring " I think ? .

I am still active in the gun world, the above thread is my current ride over on CastBoolits at Gunloads.com.

HST cut bullets (cast or jacketed) open up wide off a six petal cut system with a small expansion cone at the tip to get the expansion rolling. Most of you guys understand Federal HST type expansion, so we can leave that with the thread to explain what is going on.

Even crip old farts can still have fun, you know.

At 2,700 fps speeds no petal cut plain lead slug is going to do perfectly

I was thinking 2200 fps was the max for lead GC bullets , for wheel weights anyway ?

In my .357 20" barrel I ran some 125gr round w/flat slugs up to the 2200 speed and they seem "Really Hot" .
Maybe ...
I should take the coping saw to a few of them to see how they act on a water milk jugs ? Huh

Whats the "cone" to put in the leading end ?

Reply #8 - 02/17/24 at 08:34:13 For jacked bullets I use a simple HSS 45^ocountersink to put in the opening bevel. There isn't a lot of bevel area needed as the shock of the tip hitting the soft target jacks the soft lead open fairly easily. Once expansion starts, it is self-maintaining until the cut flutes are fully opened and bent over the bullet body.

That makes me think of a "Tip" I made for my bullet seating die that pushes the bullet into the case by putting the pressure on the bottom of the HP and opening the sides of the HP a little extra also.

It looks like this little jewel if lined up with the cut slots would open/start the opening process just fine ! Wink

But

Can you imagine the field day a Democratic Prosecuting Attorney would have with a bullet like that ? Roll Eyes

I'd think it would stop a deer size varmint in it's tracks "Right Nicely" !

I milled some of these sort of cuts into a powder coated 185 grain cast lead bullet, but it was too much time and trouble to do very many of them.

The HST cuts are a lot quicker to do and you can fixture the assembled cartridge to make it even easier to do.

Buying expensive premade bullets is not what we do at Castboolits.com.

Long time ago I was casting some 115gr Lee SWC's and was dropping them in some burn motor oil to quench them ... and they turned black with the color imbedded into the bullets , they also were real really HARD !
Their cutting edges were "Hard and Sharp" , I'm thinking they were some of the best bullets I've ever dropped out of a mold !
But
I've shot them all up long ago and have been unable the get the process to repeat its-self.

Has any of the Cast Bullet group ever shared a similar story and know how to do it on command ?
