Exhaust Pipe Heat Wrap

i’m going to offend some people and make them defensive, but I don’t like heat wrap on the exhaust pipe.

1) It doesn’t look cool or tough. It looks ugly.
2) It looks like the bike has been bandaged up after major surgery.
3) Trapping heat inside the pipe seems dumb to me.
4) Are you trying to hide a rusted and corroded pipe?
5) Does it capture water/moisture and cause corrosion?
6) Does it really keep your right leg cooler?
7) You actually spent money on that?

Come and get me exhaust pipe wrappers! I know I should just shut up and let people do their thang! But if I can prevent one person from wrapping their pipe, my life is complete.

You aren't stopping Me,, cuz I wasn't gonna, anyways,, If it wasn't rusty before, it will be. I don't see many wrapped, so it's really rare,but fun to take note lot the guy who started at the muffler.

But on a motorcycle it is a fashion statement......just like the too overly wide rear tire!

Dave, you made a believer out of me and I went to the dark side with a 130/90-15 rear tire! And thanks again for the recommendation of the Shinko 230 Tour Master tires. I like ‘em a lot! Zero complaints! It mostly corrected the speedometer/odometer error too! I think it actually swung too far in the opposite direction. The real 64 is the new 60 on the gauge! Or the gps speedo app and my buddy’s Suzuki Bergman’s speedo is wrong. lol.

I think wrapped pipe looks really bad. I also love stock Savages the most, but I see a build now and then that is nifty. Everybody is free to do their own thing.

Dave recommended the 130/90 to me after I nearly killed myself trying to mount an oversized tire that would have rubbed anyway. That 130/90 Dunlop that I chose went on like melted butter in comparison. The 140/80 is only available from IRC and Dunlop, but I ended up with Dunlop anyway Grin

My speedometer reads around 3-4 MPH too fast, so I have to remember to speed a little. I don't know why this is. I have the stock size front tire.

Only the rear tire impacts the speedo as it communicates back to the speedo gear/cable in the motor. Interesting that your speedo still reads a little low with the 130/90-15. I know the 140/80-15 causes it to read a little low (like 3-5mph).

I didn't realize they varied from one bike to the next. I thought they were all uniform from the factory. I thought I read somewhere here on the forum that they all read too high compared to actual/real speed. Hmm.

Hey MM. I hear ya! I'm doing some research and shopping for a stainless steel pipe 1.75" OD / 1.625" ID. I might have found a local muffler shop that wouldn't charge an arm & a leg to get one made for the Savage! Fingers crossed.

Even if I was fixing & flipping a barn find, I wouldn't do the heat wrap tape. Each of the bikes I've bought and ended up selling, I've treated it like I was going to keep it. I kinda follow the "golden rule" but boy have I bought some bikes where the prior owner didn't. Embarrassed

Hey, I got 'em cheap and I kinda had some idea what I might be stepping into.

I found a W650 a few years ago , sitting in a shed dry but dusty to the point of couldn't see what color it was.

I drove it for a year plus a summer. Spoke wheels and Carbs ... so I didn't keep it.

I really liked the idea of the shaft drive OHC system. The twin cylinder bike I have now with the cam-chain in the middle worries me somewhat. I know it's just a matter of time before the cam-chain wears out so I look at it as a short life motor.
The last "Non-Single-cylinder" engine I had (OHC-long term) was a four cylinder Kawasaki 750cc . It's chain started flopping about 50k-miles ... it did have eight valves to lift , but so does my twin I have now ??? Huh

Phoned around, found a local shop, quoted $50 for the bike exhaust. Result: Semi-matte silver, flawless. Pay the man $50. Will never turn blue or rust. Cheers!
