Maybe we can do a Dragon Run or two this summer now that warm weather is making its way to the mountains ?

I have been watching the weather in the mountains - it is still too wet to plan anything very far in advance.  Just like our weather here has been very wet - you might be able to sneak in one or two dry days....but you will only get a day or two to figure out if the weather will be suitable.  Tellico Plains seems to have good weather sooner than it arrives in the Robbinsville area - and yet it is still a bit too damp for my liking.  The Cherohala Mountain Trails Campground has some nice and affordable cabins, they serve breakfast most days, they have camping available without any advance reservations.  https://cmtrails.com/

(A friend of mine who was been riding his whole life says you can't really do any normal riding until June).

My neighbor and I have started to go riding in the area around the KY/VA border.  The area is mountainous and the roads are nice riding.  There is little to attract tourists and traffic is light - the coal and logging activities are not busy like they once where and the area is a bit depressed.  There aren't fancy restaurants or bars in the area and getting breakfast sometimes requires an hour of riding before we find something to eat - by lunch/dinner time we are always out riding in areas with places to eat.  There are a lot of very small towns and great riding - the roads tend to be located in the valleys between the mountains and are very curvy, and a few of them go over the mountains and have steep roads and curves.  This is a nice place for us as we can get there with a 4 hour drive - while it takes us 5 hours to get to Tellico Plains, 7 hours to Robbinsville and 8 hours to Suches.  The "Gateway to the Breaks" is a nice little hotel in the area:
https://www.gatewaymotelva.com/
There is also the Breaks Interstate Park with lodging and camping:
https://www.breakspark.com/lodging-main-page

If you want to go ride 2-3 days soon at Tellico Plains - I am up for it if we can find a few good weather days (after the coming Memorial Day weekend).  Both 315 and 68 are great roads that you may not have ridden yet.  And there is always the Cherohala Skyway and roads on the east side of the mountain.

Thanks for the feed-back Dave !  Smiley

I spend two weeks on the Moab Adventure , and then a week at Loretta Lynn's ranch as a CMAUSA Volunteer last week.  Both were "Fun on Two Wheels" ...  Grin

So now I got to "Pay the Piper" ya might say .  It will take a few weeks to get my chores caught-up and get the first Hay Cutting in the barn.   Then I can have another week off  Wink .
But , the Mountains should be warm by then !    Tell Bat Man Howdy for me !  Smiley

Hay , I like the looks of this place ! https://cmtrails.com/
and $12.00 tent sites makes it "inviting"  Cool

The owners of this place are nice people.  Down to earth, friendly and they live on the property.  The place has basic amenities and provides bathrooms and showers, and breakfast that is good.  It is like "Mo's" place of 10 years ago before they just got tired of doing maintenance and having 50 guests in a week.  I do miss going to Mo's - but the Iron Horse campground is only a mile away and has much cleaner/nicer facilities.

This has been a very wet spring for us in KY, and looking at the forecast for Tellico Plains it appears they are wet as well. Folks are having trouble with the first cutting of hay, as it just won't stop raining.  There are parts of my field that are so wet my tractor would sink in a foot if I tried to drive across the field.

The forecast for the next couple of weeks looks wet in Tellico Plains - as does the first half of June.  There likely will be 2-3 day periods that are dry - and maybe we can sneak down there with little advance notice.  We don't need reservations for camping in a tent (or my trailer) - so we can just show up and have a place to stay.  Cabins often have to be booked in advance for weekends - weekdays they often have some available.  They do have special events - I have not found a page that shows the dates of events - last year when I was there an event for dirt bikes was going on......we were the only street bikes in the campground (and the only bikes that weren't covered in mud)!

The Tellico Plain Visitor Center has a museum, and it includes a huge gun display.  I was very surprised to see this large collection in that small town - and it is free to visit!  The photo shows one wall - I believe that this wall is about 1/3rd of the guns on display.  In another building they have a Model T Ford that was a telephone line service truck that is really cool, along with several other vehicles.

I just need somewhere cooler and dryer right now.  Houston is a swamp sauna oven until October.  When we can catch a break from this rain, riding in the early morning before 11am is tolerable.

Its been unnaturally rainy here in TN too !  When it gets hot in the Valley ... its time to head for the Mountains !

I've been under the impression that the weather follows an 11 year cycle and this might the wet end of the cycle ?   Huh

For five years I kept a "Weather Calendar" to track the Moon Cycles and the weather.   Well , there is a pattern but it's not a simple one , its more like the "full moon of June is always full of storms" type of thing.   I finally got tired of having a stack of calendars laying around so I threw the mess out and started going by the "long range weather forecast.  Grin

But

It's about time for a Tellico Plains TN. mid week camp-out !

I live two days ride from Houston Tx. (850 miles+-) and if you incorporated the Natchez Trace into the ride there is a free (running water) campground on the south end of the Trace near where I-20 and Trace meet.   Then the next night you can sleep in one of my recliners , then the next day we can be at Tellico Plains Campground.
Sometime in the last of July according to my calendar ?  Roll Eyes

Sometimes you need to take your bike out for a 10 day ride !  Just Because !   Smiley
.............

The 7th - 11th the wife and I are doing one of the classes at VBS .  I've got side-tracked on some other stuff so : I still need to cut and roll about 60 acres of hay to sell this winter to pay for next years rides .  Wink
So , I should be having some Calendar Room by the last of July , Maybe even before ?  Undecided

Retirement Life is not what I expected !

You sure are making me jealous with all that riding.

Hay Springman

I just got back from a 1500 mile (4 day) bike ride .   To and from Atoona PA .
It was the CMAUSA's 50th birthday National Rally .
There were four of us from my local chapter went and I didn't have to do any of the planning.

Here are some conclusions I learned from ridding with a group like that for multiple days.

1.   Some folks have to EAT a BIG MEAL 3 times a day .
2.   Some folks don't hold a steady speed out on the interstate.
3.   Everybody , (including me) takes a wrong turn sometimes.
4.   Some folks get grumpy after 350 miles a day even on big roads.
5.   Some folks seem to think constantly working the throttle is Normal ?
6.   Some folks think leaving at 5:30 in the morning is a good thing.

I've made several BIKE trips to Kerrville Texas (1000 miles ride).     Several of my trips have been:
1.  To take a 400 mile RELAXING RIDE down the Natchez Trace Parkway (45-55mph)  to the FREE campground (running water) at the South end of the Trace.  (10hr day.)
2.  Take a 600 mile run on the Super Slab on day two.  (10hr day.)

That combo has worked fine repeatedly .

One of those trips was a 835 mile day on a Savage with a Harley Seat on it and a 2.7 gallon tank.   I got a bigger tank after that one !  Grin

The conclusion from ridding with those folks is :
Next time I'll be in on the route planning .

Well the nights have warmed up a bit - but suddenly the days are "HOT"!

We are having a heat wave that doesn't appear to have an end in sight.  Daytime temps have been in the middle 90's and for the 10 day forecast the daytime lows are high 80's.  The forecast for Tellico Plains is similar.

I likely won't be able to go on a fun ride out of town for another month - the end of July.  We are going on a 2 week trip with Deb's sister from July 9th - 23rd.  When I get home it will take some time to get our property back in order.

Getting things back in order !      I'm caught up in that very thing now.  Yesterday and today I put about 60 acres of hay on the ground.   Now its a race to get it rolled and in the barn before rain returns.  I'm raking and rolling solo this year so it take a while.

Kent has a new Granddaughter in Florida , so his rides this year will be to Florida and back !  Smiley

I'll aim at the last part of July !  Wink

I'm thinking of ridding the  Zen Bike over to Tellico Plains campground for 4 nights (28 - 31 July) .
Monday - Thursday .

I've got it in my calendar and hope for dry weather !   Wink
