Drives me crazy
04/22/25 at 15:16:11

Sorry for a new thread - But my sons savage drives us crazy !!!!

I all started after we got it out from winter storage - was stored nice warm and dry.

But it died after like 5-10miles ...and would not start before 1/2 hour ..
so thought it was flooded ( maybe for trying tot start so much )

Anyway

1) Measured ignition coil - it was + 40k ohm (specs are max 25) -
so we got a new orig coil and plugcap.

2) Petcock did not work in primode, and diagphrame was done ...- So a new orig petcock.

3) New choke plunger assy because rubber was done one the old one

4) Looked in carb - but everything look very nice - and bike drives fantastic ( when it drives )

So after all these things Boom !!! Bike started right up and is driving better than ever and starts much faster / easier ...

So job done - happy son ...

Until today - did exactly the same he had been driving almost 150 miles after repair - and suddely bikes dies agian - it like the same feeling as when u run out of gas it sputters and shoots ...and bog out ...

So I came to try and see if we could get it started - i took off the fuel line to the carb and tried to start it again and again and finally it started up ..
fuel line on carb again ( so i think it was flooded ) - But yes now it drives perfectly again  ....

I really have no CLUE what to look for - i guess i could take apart carb - but really i dont think its that problem is maybe it will run perfect for 150 miles and then die ....

Its really really getting frustrating   :'( :'( :'( :'(

THANKS for reading this LOOONG story .... I could just need some ideas...

We have also checked vacum hoses and fuelcap vent....

well... 150 miles is about when it should run out of gas.  Huh

the first question every newbie is asked: did you replace the petcock with one from a yamaha raptor? If not, do it !
My winter storage includes draining gas from the tank and float bowl. Residue can be a problem. You may want to pull the carb, take it apart and soak it.
Others here can chime in with other ideas.
Cheers!  Cool
ps: the original vacuum petcock is a problem. ordering an original is the opposite of what to do, cap the vacuum port at the carb and toss the hose.

Sorry but no I absolutely do not want a raptor ...I'm 100% sure I'll forget to close it 90% of the times ...we have two Savage's and petcock normally work fine ..however the old one was maybe 10-15 years old ...so ok to replace ...

I think Suzuki engineers did a good job...but YES when they get old the diaphragm or what it is called dies ...but so does the ones in my Husky saws ...

So yeah I'm not gonna be a raptor fan or a cct mod fan ...

I like to keep things original 😀😀

Oh sry btw ..yes I had carb apart looked as new inside ...🤷...

And also the bikes starts and run perfect....it seems totally random when it dies ...so frustrating...- but next time just to be sure it's not vacuum related I'll hurry at set the petcock to prime just to see ...

Thanks for your advices anyway 😃

I'm having a similar problem in that my 2005 worked - but hesitated a bit - took the carb off cleaned it, new air filter, oil change etc. - now nothing. I'll follow this thread. Nice red one btw!

I am a fan of the stock petcock as well and keep a rebuild kit in my bike tool set. That said, I used to have issues with the bike dying after I would come to a stop after a long, downhill deceleration with the engine idling and not engine braking whereas the engine was still firing at higher RPMs and burning the excess fuel (rich condition, I'm getting to that). After a lot of trial and error I isolated my issue to having raised the carb needle too much and causing a slightly rich condition in that cruise area of the carburetor. So, after cruising at speeds then dropping to idle immediately while coasting the fuel built up and then kaput. Upon an eventual restart it was a big puff of dark smoke which is an obvious sign of being rich. Lowered the needle a little and problem solved.

Not sure this is your issue. Test one thing at a time. It is possible the coil or plug is getting too hot and faulting, especially if you have any mods, have moved things around, or have anything impeding air flow to things that need it, to include the rectifier under the seat that people often cover up with "under the seat" saddle bags.

A new plug is really cheap and an easy item to eliminate next time you have the tank off.

Check your charging voltage at the battery. Mine was doing something similar. The charging voltage should be near or slightly over 15 volts DC with the engine at 3500+ rpm. If it's not, you might have an alternator issue. One of the wires from the stator had gotten up against the drive pulley and worn through on mine. Charging voltage still read 12-13 volts, but if you checked the three yellow wires from the stator, 2 had 100+ volts AC and the third had zero with either of the other wires. It should read 100+ AC with any two of the three. Getting to it was a PITA, but repairing the wire brought it back to spec.

Electronic ignition depends on a good charging system, since most of them stop working if you don't have at least 11 volts DC. A good battery can drop below 11 volts, then build up a surface charge after sitting a while that will let it run... until the battery drains again.
