Heat wrap
05/05/25 at 11:00:44

My exhaust header chrome was already mediocre when I bought the bike. But now after the winter it has become really ugly and I can't get it to shine nicely anymore.

I want to buy heat wrap. Does anyone know how many meters goes around the header.  Is 5 meters enough?
5 meters is approximately 16.4 feet.

Anyone?

If you're just going down to the muffler I say yes. But what do I know. Heat Sheild guys know more than me --> here's a calculator:

Wraps are a little controversial, because they also serve to retain more heat of the exhaust gas. If the discolored chrome is bothersome, it is relatively inexpensive to get the header ceramic coated, in my case I did black. It has been 3 years and there is no problem with it.

I did already have a VooDoo slash cut muffler, so I replaced it with a black one to complete the look.

Tanks for sharing.

That ceramic coating seems like a great solution, but I'm thinking about selling my bike and the heat wrap is popular here.

It's only $10 on aliexpress and then you have 16 feet and that's more than enough because you only need 12 feet.

I hope the titanium color looks good with my purple paint.

My silver ceramic is great, but if you're selling, choose cheapest option.
Cheers!  Cool

Some bluing near the exhaust port is pretty normal. If it's no more than 4-6" down the pipe, you're probably ok, but if wraps are popular where you are, I'd wrap it.

I'm considering wrapping and read the pros and cons. Question: Since the Savage is air cooled, and get's hot when not moving, then would a wrap heat things up yet more, and compromise performance or improve performance? The WWW says it can do either, but does not explain why or what a Savage will do with increase heat.

The contact area of the pipe to the engine is so small that the pipe temperature will have almost no effect on engine temps. Ambient air temperature would have a greater effect on the engine temperature than whatever heat the exhaust pipe can transfer to the engine, wrapped or not. So wrap it if that is what you like.

When I see a bike with a wrapped exhaust, I'll immediately reduce my offer price by the cost of new exhaust system.  The assumption one should make is that the pipe is going, going, and maybe already gone.

People put the stuff on to cover rust.  It covers the rust, but it also increases the rate of oxidation, probably by an order of magnitude.  There's nothing like maintained high temperature alternating with moisture retained against the surface to promote corrosion.

Some typical results when the noise suddenly gets loud and the wrap comes off:

Me, I'd rather have an ugly pipe, than a pretty wrapped bundle of iron oxide chunks.

The purpose of the stuff was to insulate exhaust, thereby increasing exhaust temperature, thus lowering gas density, thus improving flow rate, performance at the cost of component longevity.  I wish folks would stop using it as a cosmetic band aid.

Just my opinion.
