It would pull to the side when braking without having a sidecar wheel brake. It could also and more likely be caused by his bike not being sett up properly. Having a driven sidecar wheel can cause problems due to the lack of sidecar wheel lead. It should be between 8 and 12 inches, but that is not the case with a driven wheel.
