Stalling in Heavy Rain - Who has found a cause?
08/17/25 at 19:07:16

2012 S40 - 1400 miles.  I just rode in heavy rain for the first time with this bike, and it sputtered and stalled, almost stranding me.  This was unexpected.  I've ridden several different bikes in heavy rain several times over the last 40 years with no issues ever.  I've used Search and gotten some opinions.  I would like to ask this question a different way:  who has had success eliminating this problem, and what did you do?  I know about spraying water to try and replicate the problem, which I will do this week.  I'm just curious if anybody has had this problem and cured it.  Thanks.

Faulty spark plug cap and ignition wire would likely be the first place I would look.

Thank you.  I will do this.  I was wondering about the kill switch taking on water as well, being right out there in the open.

It could be - another possibility is the kick stand safety switch.  Those have been known to go bad and cause problems.

I did some water testing.  I did a little too much, because I couldn't start it the rest of the day.  It seems like it could be the spark plug wire.  I'll have to get a new one one of these days.  I put some dielectric grease where I could for now.  It's either that or carry a can of WD-40 like you did for your distributor cap if you owned an AMC Hornet.  After all, the WD stood for Water Displacement.
