The rules of belief are coincidentally similar between Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and there have been about a thousand religions.]
They all basically say don't kill, steal lie cheat and on and on, but they originate from the minds of men and the inherent morality of humanity
Which we people of common sense call Atheism
Before there was a god, there was us
and we invented him
like a thousand times
But that’s not true. For the vast majority of human existence, there was very little morality. Humans were very much a commodity to be used by the few in power. It really wasn’t until the Christian church begin to take hold that some semblance of order became more clear out of the chaos. That same process occurred in areas without Christian influence but regardless, it was a common belief that we are not alone, that there is something beyond what we can see.
In the context of what Shapiro and Maher were talking about, modern civilization, it was religion and the foundational belief that all human beings had inherent value. That’s what drove (slowly to be sure) the evolution of a civilized society. That’s why the society we live in today, began on 3rd base.
Societies that reject that and claim atheism, exists, (if fact their very survival) depends on the rest of society tempering their natural tendencies by voluntarily suppressing their inner instincts.
