Evidence the world is not ready to commit suicide just yet. I imagine New York City will learn the same lesson next year.
“This is a bad democratic season for socialism in Latin America, which means the tide of leftist violence and economic decline is going in reverse. The latest evidence is the landslide presidential victory on Sunday by Chile’s José Antonio Kast of the center-right Republican Party.
Mr. Kast, who ran on a platform of faster growth, fiscal responsibility, safer streets and ending illegal immigration, routed leftist Jeannette Jara, 58%-42%. Chile follows Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Honduras in rejecting hard-left presidential candidates since 2023. So much for Hugo Chávez’s Bolivarian revolution sweeping the hemisphere.
The reversal is especially stark in Chile, which four years ago took a chance on socialist Gabriel Boric. He defeated Mr. Kast with 56% of the vote as voters believed his promise of “social justice” following the 2019 leftist riots in Santiago and other cities.”
