Posts: 49 nanaimo british columbia Gender:	k&n air filter swap 07/11/04 at 07:37:10 hi everyone, need help on 86 savage removing air box and installing k&n , what to use to hook up to carb, does battery stay in original, etc, any hep would be great, rear fender is now mounted to swing arm so i need all the room under seat i can get.

I removed my airbox, then cut and rewelded the battery box brackets to position the battery 1 1/2" rearward. This gave me clearance to install the K&N tapered cone filter. Also, to accomodate the filter, I cut out a section of the rear tank mount.

What I would really like would be a smaller gel battery and box, but that will be next winter Tongue

Did anyone try to install the filter into the muffler bracket. I have seen something like that in another forum but cannot remember where.

You are saying they moved the battery down to the shelf that holds the evaporative emissions junk on the california emissions spec bikes? Did the person also move the entire battery box and extend the battery cables? I wonder how grimey it gets down there...but it would lend to slightly lowering the center of gravity and opening up space near the carb for intakes.

There isn'e any real "horizontal shelf" There are 2 brackets that bolt between the frame and the engine to hold the battery box. I have seen one turned sideways, but since I needed to keep the chrome box (for now), I just moved it rearward.

The brackets would lend themselves to building a "shelf" if someone wanted to turn the battery sideways and stick it between the frame tubes and over the swingarm.

I have pictures of 2 different Savages done that way.

the original batterybox was removed completely and ofcourse the cables were lenghtened. Could not see if the battery had the original dimensions.

Wow. Blue frame and blue carb. Nice job on hiding the battery. I hadn't thought of putting it down there. I like the forward controls too.

I also notice where he put his breather filter! The only problem that I have with that position is that it is lower than the breather connection on the engine, and condensed oil vapors will drip out....I put mine in a different position, up higher on the left side.
