On this tire note, my front tire has large cracks. I found a place with a good deal for tires plus mounting and balancing.
I can change my own tire on a car. Tell me is it the same with a motorcycle? Pretty straight forward? It doesn't look that way.
Do you think my (son) auto mechanic can put the tire on the bike? Or is it more complicated?
Also any how to links would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Update on my winter project:
I've got the entire bike torn down to the frame, swing arm, and engine.
I've decided instead of using the old Virago tank that I have I'm going to use the tank off of a 1997 Suzuki Marauder.

What has to be modified on the Marauder tank to fit the Savage?
Please post some pictures!

I don't have any pics with the tank on yet since I haven't started working on mounting the tank yet.
But so far what I can see that is going to need to be done is mostly mods to the frame:
-- Weld a plate at the base of the back bone to move the mounting bolts since the tank is longer.
-- Replace the bars in the front where the tank mounts at the top with longer ones, and find larger dampaning rubbers.
-- The last thing, and the one I think is going to be the hardest part is making up 2 pcs to go between the neck and the tank in the front to fill in the empty space.
If anyone has any pointers or ideas I'd love to hear them.

Will do, now that the snow is actually flying here I'll be able to get more done! I'm hoping to be able to get the engine pulled on Friday.

Well, new rubber just moved up on my list. I was inspecting the bike yesterday and noticed cracks starting in the sidewalls of both tires. Well, she's a '98 and the tires are OE, so I guess it's to be expected.
