Payin' Forward!

8)Well, this past Sunday morning while out working in my yard, I heard a yell from the poleline which runs behind my property ... the area is mostly a peat bog which is frequented by local kids on dirtbikes. Anyhoo, I walk out back of my shed and see off in the distance a bunch of 10-12 year olds standing around a fallen dirt bike, so I go over to see if everything was alright. One of the young boys had tossed himself "arse over handlebars" when his chain came off and jammed, but he was otherwise OK. Now these little urchins were typically boisterous and "saucy" (Newfspeak for "flippant", sarcastic and/or foul mouthed), with lots of swearing on the "F'n bike" ... but I suggested that they drag the injured bike back to my yard and I'd try to fix it for 'em. They agreed and humped the Honda thru mud and rotten snow from the poleline to my yard. For the next half hour, I gabbed with the youngsters, straightened a bent shifter and re-installed and tightened the chain ... and in the course of the 30 mins, these kids went from being little neo-brats to polite and well mannered with a hail of "Thanks Mister!" when they finally fired up the dirt bike and were on their way.
I chuckled to myself as I wiped the grease from my hands ... eventhough I had interupted my own chores, it felt really good to have helped those kids out ... and I think they got something out of it to ... all to often parents'll give a kid something like a dirt bike to occupy them and keep them out of the parents hair ... rather than use it as a way to spend quality time with their kid, so I think those kids really appreciated an adult who was willing to go out of his way to help and just talk to them ...

I bet you were a big influence on them just by doing that small favor for them. It's too bad that a lot of people look the other way when it comes to helping people out, either because they feel they are too busy or don't want to be bothered.
Nice to know there are still nice people out there..and that they ride a Savage  Wink

Way to go. Maybe the kids will remember and do the same for another rider someday. I'm not fond of the idea of giving a kid a dirt bik and turning them out for the afternoon, and the crack up you describe is why. Not many people will stop to help another rider anymore...especially where I live. Thumbs up!  8)

If there were more people like yourself out there, then there wouldn't be anything wrong with turning the kids out on their dirtbikes for a little while. Its the other 85% of the population that you have to watch out for. Looks like you made a few friends.   Smiley

Thanks for the accolades guys ... didn't post the account for the praise though ... but only 'cause I thought it was an amusing incident that others might enjoy ...
Ride Safe everyone ... it'll be a couple of weeks more before my Savage comes out of hibernation for the season ....

Nice story perry. reminds me of growing up, riding old clunker dirt bikes. The pole/hydro lines and gravel pits were our favorite spots.....

Glad you guys are finally getting spring.

Mud and rotten snow. ahhhhh spring in Eastern canada.......lol.but you forgot about the thawing dog turds......those things are like hitting oil......lol

cheers

LOL Mike ... yup as the owner of 2 dogs (a mutt & a chihuahua), I know whatcha mean about dog turds being eternal ... I swear they have the same half-life as uranium! A viscious Winter doesn't eliminate 'em! We wouldn't need Middle Eastern crude if we could think of a way to harness the power of dog crap ...
