8)Well, this past Sunday morning while out working in my yard, I heard a yell from the poleline which runs behind my property ... the area is mostly a peat bog which is frequented by local kids on dirtbikes. Anyhoo, I walk out back of my shed and see off in the distance a bunch of 10-12 year olds standing around a fallen dirt bike, so I go over to see if everything was alright. One of the young boys had tossed himself "arse over handlebars" when his chain came off and jammed, but he was otherwise OK. Now these little urchins were typically boisterous and "saucy" (Newfspeak for "flippant", sarcastic and/or foul mouthed), with lots of swearing on the "F'n bike" ... but I suggested that they drag the injured bike back to my yard and I'd try to fix it for 'em. They agreed and humped the Honda thru mud and rotten snow from the poleline to my yard. For the next half hour, I gabbed with the youngsters, straightened a bent shifter and re-installed and tightened the chain ... and in the course of the 30 mins, these kids went from being little neo-brats to polite and well mannered with a hail of "Thanks Mister!" when they finally fired up the dirt bike and were on their way. I chuckled to myself as I wiped the grease from my hands ... eventhough I had interupted my own chores, it felt really good to have helped those kids out ... and I think they got something out of it to ... all to often parents'll give a kid something like a dirt bike to occupy them and keep them out of the parents hair ... rather than use it as a way to spend quality time with their kid, so I think those kids really appreciated an adult who was willing to go out of his way to help and just talk to them ...
