The unthinkable

After the first of the year I will be purchasing a HD and though I do not want to I may need to trade in the Suzi to get the one I really want. I know, how dare I! Like I said I don't want to. Anyhow, the reason I am bringing this to the board is this. Would it be worth the time and effort to put the Savage back to stock "visually" before going for the trade or will the HD creeps even care? I just want to get maximum trade for the ole girl should the need arise. What cha think? ???

Might bring more if you point out the "custom" features as no doubt they'll be trying to sell you on the idea that "custom" features are better - looks like trade in is around 1200 and retail around 1900 depending on where you live and such according to www.kbb.com - might should try to sell it out right

if some of your visual mods are in sellable condition your trade in value wont be affected if you remove them and
sell them, you may be a few $ ahead..your trade in value will be lowest dealer can get away with..good luck

IMHO, sell the bike on your own. If you need the money for the HD deal, it should be in hand. Just my $.02.

Why a Harley?  I'm just curious, not criticizing.

I agree with others that it is better to sell than trade in.  However there are advantages to the trade-in such as convenience.  And if that is the route you choose then I would take it back to stock as much as possible and sell your aftermarket parts for some extra cash.

If you can, keep if for the short in-city runs, assuming you are not rural.  From what I've read by those with multiple bikes, the Savage is hard to match for those quick hops.  Otherwise, your Suzi is a very fine looking bike.  Dealer has to make a profit and will offer you considerably less than you could get selling it yourself.

So let's get to the fun part -- which Harley are you looking at?  New?

Never trade your bike to a dealer, especially one who does not sell that brand. I spent 30 years in the car business, believe me I know how it all works. If you do not want to keep your Savage, either put it up on the board, list it on ebay or put it on Craiglist. You will get much more than you will get from the Harley dealer. I recently bought a 1995 Shadow VKLX Deluxe from my local Harley dealer off the back lot for 1500.00 (do you think they lost money on that???). Go see what they're doing on ebay. Put the extra cash in your pocket, Harley dealers make plenty already.

If you have time before purchase of the HD, I would definitely try to sell it myself, you will get much more $$ for it that way.  It can't hurt to try.  You may end up ahead.

I appreciate all the responses guys, thnx. I would like to point out that I am in no way abandoning you guys. I want to keep my little baby. I was just curious how much if any the trade in value would be affected by the aftermarket stuff because I was considering getting rid of all my OEM parts that have been removed from the bike. The HD guys are only getting the bike if there is no other way!. I just want 2 bikes. Why a Harley? It's just something I've always wanted and never had the oportunity to have till now.  I Like the new bikes but they come with nothing. For the same money I can get a used bike with lots of extras. Many times with a partial warranty still intact. As far as the model? Not really sure yet. I really like the Wide Glides and the 1200 Sportys. Oh and if I sell it outright, It would most definatly be offered to my friends here first. Grin

i cant say as i blaim you for wanting HD, i LOVE mine! i ride it to work daily (6mi @ way), i use it for every trip for every reason. i ride debby's suzi when i have the HD down for maintenance. a 22yr old police bike requires some attention after 100k+ miles Shocked most of the big maintenance issues have been addressed, clutch, sprockets, chains, wheel bearings, tires, etc. the custom paint didn't set properly, so eventually it'll have to get some down time for that,,,again :'(
mine is an '84 fxrp(p=police) which is more like the savage/sportster than a bagger, 19"  front wheel, wide glide front end, dual disc front brakes, single disc rear, 80 ci (1340cc) motor, 5spd. big motor, small bike, great combo Grin Shocked

I WANT quite a few more than just two bikes.  Bikes are like guns -- each has a particular purpose it is best suited for at at which it does far better than other bikes.  For ripping around in the urban setting it is difficult to match the Savage.  While capable, the highway is not the Savage's forte.

Between the Dana Wide Glide and the 1200 Sportster:

IMHO,  the Sportster is a compromise between the highway cruisin' Wide Glide and the urban scootin' Savage -- if you can only have one bike and were going to do a fair amount of highway you might consider a sporty.  You're only young once.  Sitting in your golden years, reminiscencing your life, you will regret adventures not taken more than any bad experience you may have on those adventures.

That new "Street Bob" is pretty sweet. Kinda resembles a Savage on steroids! That would be my choice.

If I had the money in my pocket right now I would go to the Harley dealer right now ... well I would need to put my riding clothes on first ... and buy the 1200 sporty with the dual plug heads, perf cam and upgraded suspension.    I have wanted one of those for some time now.  The Savage stays  here too, no trade or sale for it ... "Rex" is a member of the family.
