I really like the Sportster 1200 Roadster.http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/2007_Motorcycles/2007_Motorc...
I'd love to keep my S40 forever but my one income budget won't allow 2 bikes & someday (about 5 years?) I'll be moving on. Triumph, Sportster, I dunno.

Don't feel bad. I've been looking at a 1999 FXSTB custom we have on the lot. It is almost a decent bike (needs a seat and some real bars, I loathe drag bars). 103 cubic inch stroker engine. But, I don't think it is worth $10.4K, even if it does have only 8200 miles on it...

I did just miss out on a FREE 74 inch Shovelhead...

Oh well, the Vulcan as a daily rider and the Savage as my weekend toy will just have to suffice for now...at least until I stumble on a UL/VL big twin flathead or Indian Chief flathead, for a good price (mechanically/cosmetically fubar and dirt cheap, like basically "get that pile of scrap out of my yard" cheap).

I grew up riding OLD American iron...and HD went out of business in 1964. The Twinkie (twin cam) is a Kawasaki design.

steelwolf, i just read through the posts again, everybody i know that bought a sporty, has upgraded to a big twin with in a year or two. if it were me, i'd ride away on the wide glide. do it once, and be done with it.

wd, a friend of mine has a '47 indian, in a basket, he has had longer than anybody can remember, i've been trying to capture it from him for years. i can appreciate your desires.

I've been jonesin' for a hertitage softtail, maybe a sportster.  I've heard the same thing that almost everyone that gets a sportster upgrades very soon.  Maybe it is just the culture of bigger is better.

I'm on one of the Kawi boards, Beartooth's. I'm also on The Horse Backstreet Choppers, and occasionally Intruder Alert (where Intrud'n and Polar Pilot from the Heise site hang out occasionally. Oh, Intrud'n sold out and bought an HD by the way, Polar Pilot a 1400 Intruder).

we have a lady rider friend who rode a sporty a few years ago when HD had a deal, you buy a sporty..ride it two years.. and move to a big twin free.  she hated the sportster! it's light weight made the clutch and brakes very sensitive, it's tall stance made it difficult for her at stops, the higher center of gravity made it less neutral handling and more sport oriented. the small fuel capacity made longer road trips a drag, (stopping every 75-100 miles). when she moved to a softail lowered 2", she was a lot more comfortable with the package.  the increased weight seemed to be less of an issue than all the sporty negatives. although the lower price of the sportster sure makes them inviting, when we move debby, it will be directly to a lowered softail.

Aftermarket mods and parts are worth pretty much zero on a trade in, or even a dealership selling a used bike.   decent pipe MAY help but that's about it.

The street bob:  I was down at the local HD place this weekend, amongst others.  One salesman there, who I know a bit, Stu, told me the street bobs are more or less junk.  He said "Buy a wide glide and be done w/ it.  Most people who buy them like the $13k price tag, but then go drop another $3k on forward controls and a wide glide kit."  With sturgis comming up/happening, he also was down to about 2/5 of his normal inventory.  People were showing up and needed a new bike NOW!

Stu: "Do you care how much you pay?"
Customer: "No."
Stu: "You came to the right place!"

FWIW - Everyone I've talked to who has a "Skirtster", isn't completely happy with it.  They say it's very top-heavy and you really feel the weight in corners, like it's gonna topple, and some of them have done just that.  Given a choice, I'd LOVE to have a Heritage Softail!  But alas, we already have 3 HD's (an 04 Electraglide FLHTI, a 74 FLH Shovel and a 72 Sporty).  When I'm ready to move off the S40, I'll be hoppin on the Shovel!
