Possible timing mod

I have mentioned the 4 degree timing mod from the VLX board here befor. Apparently they also do similar things to their VLX bikes as we do on our Savages.

Ex: Air box mod. Using Uni filter foam, cut out and replace the paper air filter. $10

22 cal. mod. Adjust the pilot screw using a 22 cal. rifle shell crimped to the shape of the adjustment screw. free

Needle and jet. Raise the needle or replace the needle in the carb with an adjustable needle. Increase the size of the main jet. $65 for the Dynajet, $10 for a couple of new main jets and washers to raise the needle.

Exhaust mod Holy Order. Open up the restrictions in the exhaust by removing the rear baffles or putting a 3/8" hole through both front and rear baffles. $20 for the hole saw or free if you get one from a board member.

4 degree timing mod. Advance the timing four degrees for better acceleration. Free except for a gasket if you mess up the stock one. I wonder if it is doable on a Savage, they simply move their pickups enough to get a 4 percent timing advance for a better running and better acceleration. Any ideas anyone???

Most of the mods you have mentioned are already being done in one form or another. Airbox mods are either replace with a K+N stock unit or toss the entire airbox out and replace it with a cone type.
Replacing the main jet and triming the white spacer does almost the same as a Dynojet kit for performance. The only difference is the Dynojet has a slightly different needle shape.
Instead of trying to modify the stock exhaust can a lot of the members here just swap it out for harley mufflers or after market ones.
The timing mod hasn't been discussed to any great extent yet, seems easy enough. Your other post is the first time it has hit this board and seems to of caught the attention of a lot of Savage owners, me included.

Ed_L.

Yes I know about the Savage mods, I currently own my third. I was trying to give an example of what other bike owners are doing, which is very similar to our mods.
Thanks

Yea I realized that you had a Savage after my post, oops. Looks like the VLX owners perform the same types of mods that we do. The one mod that seems to be unique to the Savage is the seat mod cause the stock setup is so uncomfortable.  Undecided

Amen to that; One of the first mods I did was the seat mod, then later upgraded to a Sportster seat.
Thanks
