First solo ride
09/27/06 at 20:32:04

I did my first solo ride today, and it was awesome! We've had such incredible weather all week, and I've been sitting at work, pining to get on my bike, so last night I decided I was going to take it to work. (I've also been dying to show off my bike to all my co-workers who have been following my progress with this whole adventure.)

Once I made the decision, I could hardly sleep last night because I was so excited/anxious about going it alone. Also, I'm not yet licensed to ride alone, but I thought, hell, it's only a fine if I get pulled over.

On the way there, I took a nice back route (very scenic) and was completely relaxed most of the way, until I hit a construction zone where there was gravel on the road. I took it slow, but the bike fishtailed ever-so-slightly when I stopped at the stop sign. No big deal.

On the way home, I opted for another nice scenic back route, but a portion of it involved me cruising down a very busy highway section. I managed it no problem, but my bike wouldn't trigger the left-turn traffic light when it was time to get off the route, so I had to go through the red. Again, no big deal.

There was a lot more traffic on the road that I'm used to when my husband and I ride on the weekend, but I got through it all OK. It was particularly a challenge for me to have to do all the stops on my own and check for traffic before proceeding. I'm used to my husband getting there first, making the check, and me cruising through with him, often without having to come to a complete stop.

I'm also used to timing my downshifting to his, so it was good for me to have to figure it out all on my own.
I still enjoy riding more with my husband, but I'm happy that I succesfully faced one more challenge (only stalled the bike once - on a slight inclince - and only kicked it into neutral a couple of times) on this journey. My husband said that the next time we got out together, I'm going to lead. You know what? I think I'm up to the challenge!

Well done Vikki, the more you ride the more you love it.
You get those nice stretches of road, breathing nice fresh air and if you live in the boonies a bit (I do) you can identify what each farm is growing or what animals they are raising,I piece of advice if you know there is a pig farm coming up, drive fast  Wink

civil disobiedence, our country was founded on it. you go girl  Smiley

great ya got out on the road, congratulations. me i'm doing a solo three hundred mile trip to mt spokane and back in the morning.

it's so refreshing to see new riders be so excited about riding.  bikers know why dogs hang their head out the window.

i offer only one tip,  YOU ARE INVISIBLE,  other than that anything goes, (see sluggos burn out video).  8) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4pnqtSfqcM

Glad you enjoyed it. A bit of advice though, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER depend on anyone to make your traffic checks. Even your hubby. Anyone can make a mistake and your husband is gonna have a hard time living with you being hurt because you trusted him to look out for you. Your bike, your ride, your @ss on the line. Now go get yourself a great big helping of solo seat time and try not to smile to big or else you'll be picking bugs outta the "grill" for hours. Grin

you go girl! debby used to ride on the harley with me, now she gets really bent outta shape if she cant ride her own bike. she started out exactly as you are, riding along side of me, then out on solos. it is exciting for the rest of us too, to be able to share in your milestones.

Thanks for the support, everyone! It's great to see such enthusiasm, but I guess that's how it is with people who share a passion for something and always have such good advice to share.

I hear you, Steelwolf. I usually only veer off from a stop with my husband when I'm right there with him, but I guess there are some occasions where I should be taking the time to make that extra check. He's such a good rider and very much aware of my skill levels that I trust him to make the decision to proceed safely, although there are still plenty of times that I have to make a stop-and-check on my own (like if I stall the bike, if he's a few feet ahead of me or if he gets through a traffic light and I don't). I just had to do it FAR more on my solo ride. Next time I'm out with my husband, I'm going to make a conscious effort of relying more on myself for those checks.

As for the solo riding, I'm a little leery of continuing to do this without proper licensing. If I get in an accident, I'll be hooped because my insurance coverage will be null and void. So I'm thinking about booking that "skills test" (the slow parking-lot maneuvers), which, if I pass, will legally allow me to ride solo, even though I only have the bike insured until mid-November.

good for you, love!

bummer about bikes not tripping red lights - even my much heavier/larger BMW doesn't. Sometimes I sit on Savage, edge it forward but still stay out of junction & wave behind to the guy in the car behind me to move up to trip it. think people think I'm crazy - they just sit there & it rarely works!

Even after years of riding I'm so leary of jumping the red & usually turn right (we can turn right on red in CO) & take next left into side street so can do U-ey out of traffic.

By the way, I bought one of those "traffic triggers" (forget what they are really called) years ago for the BMW - just a powerful magnet that has never worked for me, so unless anyone contradicts this I advise don't waste your $$. (think they were also given thumbs down in a bike mag but many outlets sell them so...?)

I could say lots about taking care but seems most have said it (or will) - I'll just sort of paraphrase Sluggo's comment about being invisible with what I always jkeep in mind - assume everyone else is out to kill you (except other bikes, though it used to get hairy with bike messengers in London). I've advise Kathe of this so she is better prepared when she takes/passes MFS course & gets a license that way & rides off into the sunset.

in the meantime, Vicki, happy riding (alone or with hubby!)

Boy, Vikki, can I relate! I am a new rider as well and very used to my hubby on his bike riding behind me for rear protection. It is really a rush to do it yourself! You should feel proud....you have accomplished something that many women wouldn't ever dare try to do. I still can't believe that i am riding a motorcycle. A year ago i would have thought you were on drugs if you told me i'd have a motorcycle license right now......but, we grow, we change, we face new and exciting challenges.  My only suggestion is to take a motorcycle safety course. Wonderful information. If you pass their skills test, it exempts you from the DMV road test, which can be quite challenging.
Ride safe, keep practicing and remember....Helmet hair Rocks!

Yep, took a course - I wouldn't have dreamed of learning to ride without it – although where I live (near Vancouver, Canada), it gives you no exemption from the road test. (See the thread on "licensing requirements" not far down from this one.) There is a "skills test" as part of the course, but if you pass that, you still have to take the road test through the motor vehicles branch. I took the skills test twice in my course but, alas, failed it both times. Sigh.

Hey awesome!

Im a pretty new rider myself, got liscenced in may, bought my thumper new, have almost 800 miles on her now.

certian things were a real pain for me in the beginning, like having trouble getting her to kick thru "N" to lst but ive got it 99% of the time now.  Havent stalled her in a few weeks (knock on wood) and hardly have to think about all the controls anymore, I just get to enjoy the ride now!

My hubby and I took a ride after work yesterday up to Kingston NY to a well known leather store G & G, he needed a good jacket that fit him well badly.

It was about 30 miles or so each way and we live upstate so beautiful scenery and nice mellow winding country roads most of the way.  we were doing 60-65 much of the way it was so wide open, me in the lead  8)

what everyone has said turned out to be so true, it was just a matter of getting in those miles to have it all just happen without thinking so hard about everything.

My confidence is way up there now, i prefer the larger roads now, less stopping more traffic lights but wider berth.  Ive ridden on some larger roads, and done a few bridge crossings over the hudson too now.

got an e-z pass that didnt work in my husbands pocket or mine (denim jacket) that is a pain!  gonna sew up pouches we can wear around our neck and put it in so it would just be moving it to the outside when we came to a crossing and it should work. (with gloves on and all stopping at toll booths is a pain in the buns.....and then once you get the money out putting the glove back on etc.)

Enjoy your rides! think of excuses to take the bike to the bank instead of the car, think of the attention you can get being a chick on a bike and how much fun you can have.  do keep in mind that people dont see you, esp the cell phone driver/talker generation.

enjoy the ride and keep the rubber side down.........

I"ve been riding a "Thumper" for a year, turned about 4 grand on it. Amazing how the bike begins to anticipate your moves and where you want to go. Begins to sound better and smoother. Or I began like you said to enjoy the ride and not think about what I'm doing so much. Not forgetting that there are plenty out there that will not watch out for you.
Enjoy the road, Ride safe.

Because we don't want the new rider tries to catch up with the  more experience rider in front--trouble in the making Shocked So it is best to let the newbie in the lead and ride at her/his comfortable pace with the skill he/she have--safe practice I think

I've been riding mine for about a year now too - 11,000K on it. I ride to work every day as well as longer rides in the weekend. At first I always went with my partner on his Hayabusa, and followed him.

But once I got the confidence to venture out on my own I found my riding (and confidence) improved immensely.  was no longer focussing on following and keeping up with him and could ride at my own speed and experiment with cornering etc.

He commented on just how much my riding had improved after I have been out on my own a few times for some 200k plus rides.

And something else I discovered - I LIKE riding on my own. Just doing my own thing.

So now I leave the house about 20 mins before him, and we meet up for lunch at an agreed place after 1-2 hours. He can go as fast as he likes and I don't worry about holding him up.

I agree with magicfairy - ridden for almost 30 years but literally only ridden with another guy twice. both are nice guys & certainly would welcome riding with them again but I like riding on my own.

Can go as fast as I like, as far as I like & stop if I like (or not).

not antisocial or selfish & know many love group rides, but some of what makes riding for me is the solitute you can't get in a car & I'd even question my having it riding with other folk.
