Getting melted plastic off muffler
04/23/08 at 05:46:37

Today I rode my Savage to work.  When I was unloading the bike I got too close to the muffler with my Cordura riding pants and got a 3 inch spot of melted plastic on the muffler.  I scraped most of it off with a credit card but there is still an unsightly spot on the muffler.  Any ideas on how to get it off?

Some folks say Easy-Off oven cleaner works well.

Did you use it when the pipe was warm or cold?  I know on the oven you use it on a warm oven.

use it on a warm exhaust. let it set for a few minutes then scrape off with a brass scratch pad like the wife uses to clean pots and pans. brass wont scratch the pipe.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've done this SEVERAL times.  The best method that I've found is the same way stinger does ... with a brass scratch pad from the kitchen.  Let the pipe cool, get you some soap and water, and scrub it off.  Only takes about 10 or 15 minutes at the most.  Doesn't hurt the pipes at all.  Trust me, I'd know about this one.  Grin

That's good news.  The company that makes my riding pant will patch the hole for $9 plus shipping.  So all around I'm not too unhappy about it.

get a patch of leather and cover the whole inside of your leg, cause it'll just happen again, and again.

They will patch it with Kevlar which they said will just get shiny when it gets burned.

I use a nickel "5 cent" piece to get the plastic off mine. took me less then five minutes to get a spot the size of my fist off.  It will get hot so wear leather gloves.

I second Dj12midnit. Go for a nice ride. Get the muffler nice and hot and then use a 5 cent piece to rub off the plastic. The metal in the nickel is softer than the chrome, so it won't scratch. I've had to do this twice, once was my own stupid fault; the second time, some idiot rolled down his window with the drycleaning in the car and it sucked the plastic bag out the window straight on to my exhaust. I had to pull off the road to get the bag off my bike. Try the nickel. CHeap and it works like a charm. Do use thick gloves though. That 5 cent piece conducts heat big time.
