Yellow pipe .....under warenty?

Could I make them change it?

Just curios.

Bought it new three months ago.(no miles) 2007 S40 (7000+ miles now)

Is this the lean thing that causes it?

Lean is blue. Yellow is rich.  Doubt you could ever get anyone to replace it under warranty.

Rich?

I thought the backfiring was from lean?

It backfires when I turn it off, and when I deaccelerate.

I am confused now.

Ok.... the color change in metals, chrome included, happens in stages.   Heat causes the change.   (remember those days in high school shop where the teacher made you temper a piece of metal?????  and you thought you would never need it......  Grin)

On chrome it starts out as a yellow, then goes to a gold, to a brown, to blue then finally a ugly gray.

There is a color chart somewhere on the net that tells you the time /temp for each stage.  I vaguely remember it also had something about temper/hardness......

7,000 miles in three months ... wow I'm impressed!  I've got almost 10,000 in 14 months and I thought I was really doing something.  Grin  Mine started to yellow in a few months too and then gold to a tarnish kind of brown (just like T Mack said).  Yes it is from a too-lean condition, and no it's not covered under your warranty.  The EPA is the reason for your yellow pipes.

I bought a new pipe and re-jetted so I haven't had any more discoloration.  That's what I'd suggest for you to do.

RE-Jet now!!!!    Then get some of the Bluing cleaners (Blu-Away etc etc etc).   Yellow chrome cleans up real nicely.....  Gold & Brown a little less and blued pipe require elbow grease........
