Sew,didnt mean to hijack your thread. You're a lot smarter than I am. Fix that gas cap. Brand new gascap and thicker gasket didnt do it. Not filling it to the top works but someday you might find yourself in a situation like I was. I'm surprised no one has ever been seriously injured with all the leaking Savages on the road. Fix it Sew!!!

Lol I sit mine on my saddlebag while I fill up, so I cant help you there except to say get some saddlebags to hold it

I taped off the hole and sanded mine with emery cloth to get rid of the rust around the rim. I used finer and finer wet sand paper (not wet) to get a nice polish on it. Periodically I put a very light cote of whit grease on it. Worked a charm and stopped the leak.

You and Justin probably just hit the nail on the head. I'll report back in with the results. Thanks. I feel ike I'm riding a ticking time bomb. It would feel great to get that problem solved!

Reply #23 - 08/10/11 at 20:32:15 I always liked how the gas caps on the 70's Hondas (CB's, CL's, SL's etc.) worked with the hinge and catch release button. Not sure how to adapt to the Savage or for locking. But don't ever remember it leaking on my CL350 though and never an issue on what to do with the cap while refueling.

Since the Savage isn't very big and not many places to place the cap where it will be secure, I just lay mine on top of the gas pump with the key in it while filling. Wink

My '01 has 16,000 on it without a gas leak ever, except one time I way overfilled it. Then it just seeped a little from the key slot. I just lay my cap on top of the pump with the key inside as mentioned. But as for the magnet idea, I worked at a store that sold tires and appliances. I robbed the old microwaves of the round 'donut" magnets. I use one whenever I do mechanic work. Just hang it on the offending vehicle and "lay" your screws on it as you take it apart. The magnetron is the part inside about the size of a box of 25 shotgun shells. Very powerful. DO NOT rob your wife's microwave. (and unplug it first, if you do) Wink
