They have name, address and phone

A scammer trying to get my Medicare card number told me my address and name, of course they had the phone number..

I'm seriously uncomfortable with how much they know.

I'm old enough to remember when, every year, a guy came down the street and tossed a book
on everybody's front porch that had my name address and phone # in it along with thousands of other folks.

Nobody worried about it.

Different world.

techonolgy + a lot more as*holes now IMO.

Bad combination.

Just Google your name.  Most people will have a handful of paid services that for a small fee will disclose all of your public information.  Then further down is all of this for free, often times including an image of your home if you had Street View drive by.

Getting an address, for anyone, takes minutes now.

As for your Medicare card number it has already been stolen, but luckily it's part of millions of them, many are unusable due to deaths and number changes.  This is why services like "Lifelock" work - they monitor your information and alert if it's used outside your normal patterns, instead of trying to block everyone from finding your information.

Knowing scams and giving them the boot is a first line of defense.  Monitoring your personal information usage, especially dark-web, is a second line of defense.

Haha, right on.   We are no longer just a name, number, and address in the white pages. Now they have a book on all of us that goes much deeper.

Information is power, but we don't have to take the bait!   Smiley

You think Lifelock is a good idea?
Or some other?

I'm just as concerned about the Jackholes calling the cops and getting us swatted.
You may be surprised to learn that I'm nice to the people who call, until I figure out they are trying to scam me. I've been known to get downright offensive once I figure out they aren't just some poor schmuck with a cubicle and trying to sell siding or something. Or the guy who is trying to get a donation for the cops who are injured in the line of duty. I'm nice to people like that. Scammers get menu recommendations. Something like
Eat a bagOdicksBitch,,

It is, and there are lower cost alternatives, I do not have information on them at this time however.

"I'm just as concerned about the Jackholes calling the cops and getting us swatted."

If you hang-up and don't verbally insult anyone your chances of swatting are reduced and this action is completely in your control.  Scammers are hung-up on constantly, you would just be another one in the hundreds called that day.  Actions that set you apart from the crowd increase the chances of retaliation.

Swatting is a very low probability especially from an overseas scam, but how would you know where they are based out of?  I would just assess the concern over swatting and compare to your desire to tell people to "Eat a bagOdicksBitch,,"

Yeah,, I've been doing just that..

It's just SO irritating dealing with them.. And if it's not the same person, so often it's the same scam. The attempt to get our Medicare card numbers is new. I wonder if it's not the same outfit. I've seen some YouTube videos of a guy who is very computer literate and speaks some Mandarin?,not sure,, but he can mess with them.

It's pretty common that the phone number is a spoof. Sometimes it shows up as a local person and caller ID will display the name and number. It's not uncommon for me to hit the button and Redial and talk to whoever owns that phone.. Well, I don't Now,, once I figured out someone was just making it Appear that person was calling me,, I quit. Took quite a while before I could get anyone to talk to me,, because THEY thought I was another blasted scammer..
No, I wasn't rude, I was trying to initiate a conversation.

I'm going to talk to my wife about life loc..
If you think of another company that is as good, drop me a line, okay?

This article is a decent read on the offerings and has some additional information on general ID fraud.  I am personally familiar with Mr. Gewirtz work and research into this field.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/best-identity-theft-protection/

Also an article by him on credit card and banking fraud.  Read this one, I imagine you and your wife have a pretty low online profile and this article covers alternatives to paying for an online monitoring service:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-single-best-way-to-protect-yourself-against...

Life lock appears to have a one-year lower cost option that is higher after the promotional year so be aware of that.  Unfortunately the really cheap options I am aware of do not do a very good job at early detection - which is the best defense at this time.  The sooner you know a transaction, or claim of some kind happened the sooner you know to dispute it.  I have heard good stuff about Identity Guard too.

Okay,, E. I'll read the stuff and try to educate myself enough so that I can pitch it to the wife without expecting her to go study. Today is her third in a row at the hospital, she gets one off, then back for two I think.. So I'm going to have to keep my mouth shut till she gets at least two off. Gives me a little time to sort it out.

THANK YOU, once again.
