Leather Clad?!

Friends recently gave me a "coffee table" book about the Sturgis Black Hills Classic ... it has tons of neat photos ... one in particular caught my eye ... a custom motorcycle whose tank and rear fender were covered in leather ... I thought wow, how interesting ... and cool looking! Sorta like the Cruiser version of the Sportbike crowd covering their Bikes in fake tiger or zebra fur ...
Anyhoo, a google reveaved that the Bike pictured was the Beserker a one-off custom by New York leathersmith Paul Cox ...
I'll bet a Savage similarly decked out would look awesome! Hell it might be an alternative to re-painting a damaged tank?!

He used to have a 650 Boneville done up the same way. The Triumph featured heavily at Indian Larry's wake. The current caretaker was cutting question mark shaped burn-outs in front of the shop.

Leather cladding the bike looks really nice. Doing it justice is a royal PITA. There used to be one on the rally show circuit that had leather scales, each one tooled and riveted to a band crossing the panel. Very cool.

Hardest part is affixing the support bands to the underside of the tank.

Hmm, I have a Savage, I love to do custom leatherwork, and I'm bored out of my skull...How much wil you give for a set of them?

Personally, I don't really like the leather look.  But oh well.  To each his own, right?

I like the leather look.  Wonder how well it would stand up to the Texas sun?

Thanks for the offer WD ... not ready for that kinda mod just yet ... who knows, maybe in a couple of years.
I like the look though ... hey sluggo has a bad-ass Savage Bobber with a slightly damaged tank ... I'll bet it would look totally radical with the tank finished in leather?!

Well, Spring is startin' to break out here in the North Atlantic (40 deg & sun yesterday) ... saw a few Bikes on the go yesterday ... hopefully I'll have mine out in a few weeks!

Come to think of it, MY tank is damaged...and I'm not inclined to redo the top layer of putty to make it "perfect" again. Stock Tank?  Tongue There is a wholesale leather dealer in Seattle I've done business with. Well, only 3 years, 8 months until I can shop there again. I'm boycotting King County, where Seattle is, for "accidentally" allowing felons to vote in the last governors/presidential race. Of course, if it happens again...
